the center is in the news again!

Camp, as we have always known it, is a great time to explore nature, bugs and smores... but at East Side Center for the Arts, it was a great week to discover art and all the different ways we can make it work!

Our campers, shown with our lovely Olivia who was my older student helper this week–started their week choosing their special buddy for the week from the hidden grab bag..

After all the campers where happy with their new buddies, they went on to discover the wonder of bringing objects to life through art.

We first started with clay recreating the shape of our buddy by observation and starting our journey of squinting! We spent only one day no working from observation as we learned to size up objects using a square grid.

We then went right back to drawing "what we see", by working in the big studio with the easels. Each easel was set up with a different type of media that campers used to draw their buddies with help of a grid viewer. It's really hard to learn how to forget what we know, but draw what we see–and as you can see, they did a great job learning how to look at things like an artist! What a fun great group of campers!
